What to Expect at Your First BJJ Class in Hinesville

By Professor Kaelum KalistaMay 10, 2026

Stepping onto the mats for the very first time is the hardest part of jiu-jitsu. It's totally normal to feel anxious before your first day of BJJ classes in Hinesville. You might be worried about your fitness level, what to wear, or what the environment will be like. You might be wondering if you'll be thrown into the deep end with experienced grapplers who want to use you for practice.

At Team Kalista, we've built our Adult Fundamentals BJJ program specifically to remove that anxiety. We remember what it was like to walk into an academy for the first time, and we know how intimidating it can feel. Here is exactly what you can expect when you walk through our doors, from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave.

What to Wear to Your First Class

One of the most common questions we get is about the uniform. You do not need to buy a traditional jiu-jitsu uniform (a "gi") before your first class. For your introductory session, just wear comfortable athletic clothes. A t-shirt or rashguard and athletic shorts or spats are perfect.

However, there are a few strict rules about clothing for safety reasons: avoid clothing with zippers, pockets, or metal rings. Fingers and toes can easily get caught in pockets or loops during grappling, which can cause severe injuries. Also, absolutely no shoes are allowed on the mats at any time. You will train barefoot.

    What to Bring

You don't need much to get started. A water bottle is essential—you will sweat more than you expect. A mouthguard is optional but highly recommended if you decide to stick with training long-term; for your first day, you likely won't need it because you won't be doing live sparring. Most importantly, bring a positive attitude and leave any excuses at the door. You don't need to be in shape to start jiu-jitsu; you do jiu-jitsu to get in shape.

    Nail Clipping Etiquette

This might seem like an odd detail, but it is one of the most important rules in any martial arts gym: your fingernails and toenails must be clipped short. Jiu-jitsu is a close-contact sport that involves gripping. Long nails can easily scratch your training partners or get bent back during a scramble. Taking two minutes to trim your nails before class shows respect for your teammates and protects everyone from accidental cuts.

What Happens in the First 60 Minutes

When you arrive at our Hinesville academy, we'll introduce you to the coaching staff and show you around. Once class begins, here is how the 60 minutes are broken down:

    • Warmup (5-10 minutes): The class typically starts with light jogging, forward rolls, shrimping (a fundamental hip escape movement), and basic mobility exercises. Don't worry if you struggle to coordinate these movements at first—everyone looks awkward doing their first shrimp.
    • Technique Demonstration (15-20 minutes): The instructor will demonstrate a specific movement, takedown, or submission. They will break it down step-by-step, explaining the leverage and mechanics behind why it works.
    • Drilling (20-30 minutes): You will pair up to practice the technique. You will be partnered with an experienced, safe student who will help guide you through the motions. You will take turns practicing the move with zero resistance.
    • No Live Sparring on Day One: We do not make Adult Fundamentals BJJ students participate in live sparring (rolling) on their first day. Your focus will be entirely on learning the movements safely and understanding the mechanics.

    The Team Kalista Culture

The most common misconception about martial arts gyms is that they are full of aggressive people looking to prove their toughness. The reality at our academy is the exact opposite. You will find a welcoming community of professionals, parents, and military personnel from Fort Stewart who are all there to learn and support each other.

Our culture is built on serious training but low ego. Beginners are taken care of, and advanced students go out of their way to help new people learn. We foster an environment where asking questions is encouraged and safety is the top priority.

    What You'll Feel After Class

When the hour is up, you will likely feel completely exhausted—gassed in a way that running on a treadmill can't replicate. You will also feel humbled by how effective the techniques are. But more than anything, most people feel hooked. The mental puzzle of jiu-jitsu, combined with the physical exertion, makes it incredibly addictive. Most people who try their first class come back within the week for their second.
