About Professor Kaelum Kalista —
Hinesville's 2nd Degree Black Belt
From the Dominican Republic to Hinesville, GA
Professor Kaelum Kalista didn't take the traditional path to a 2nd degree black belt. Training under Professor Abraham Marte, he made history as the first American to receive a black belt in the Dominican Republic. For over a decade, he ran his own academy there, building a fierce competition team and a tight-knit community.
After relocating to the US post-COVID, he chose Hinesville as the new home for Team Kalista in October 2021. The goal wasn't just to open another gym—it was to bring elite, internationally-tested martial arts programs to Liberty County.

Self-Defense from an Active Police Officer
Sport jiu-jitsu is great, but real-world application is a matter of survival. Professor Kalista serves as an active police officer, meaning the techniques he teaches for self-defense and law enforcement aren't theoretical—they are tested in the field. He understands how to control a situation without relying on strikes, how to manage distance, and how to stay safe in unpredictable environments.
Building a Community in Liberty County
Since arriving in Hinesville, the community response has been incredible. Team Kalista was voted the 2021 Coastal Courier "Best of Liberty" for Best Recreational Facility. But the real reward is seeing students—from Adult Fundamentals BJJ students to seasoned competitors—gain confidence, discipline, and skill on the mats.
